It's been eighteen years since Rykar conquered Nevaharday and claimed its throne. Since then, he's turned the once-thriving city into a prison that's snuffing out what little freedom the rahee have left. Poor, terrorized, and miserable, they yearn for the kingdom's former heir, who died while defending the throne-or so they thought.

The truth is that Prince Jaycent has been living under the alias of a rogue named Jaspur Clovenhoof. Moving freely under his false identity, Jaspur has been secretly nurturing a rebel force to unseat his usurper.

But he's not the same person he was before. Hardened and haunted, Jaspur's allies begin to question whether he can still become the savior his people need. Years of guilt, regret, and anger have shaped the exiled prince into something more similar to Rykar than anyone wants to admit.
