Battlefield on Paper

The outstanding contribution of Battlefield on Paper is that, through the analysis of the highly important historical material of declassified CIA intelligence, it helps us understand why the U.S. decision-making circles formed a one-sided perception of China, and thereby grasp the inertial thinking and political impulses toward China among the United States and other Western countries.

This book systematically reviews the declassified CIA intelligence concerning propaganda about China (1949-1972) and constructs a knowledge framework for the CIA's production of knowledge on China. The author takes "knowledge"-the fundamental attribute of intelligence-as the theoretical juncture connecting international communication, intelligence studies, and the sociology of knowledge. The book explores the logic and outcomes of the CIA's role as a "gatekeeper" in filtering information about New China-essentially, a form of "covert international communication." From the perspective of the fundamental sources of power, it seeks to understand the Western "right to define" China, thereby providing a reference for the "Chinese version of the China story" to compete with the "Western version of the China story" in the field of international communication.
