Der von Jakob Friedrich Wanner entworfene Bahnhof Aarau, 1859 eröffnet, war ein Bau von nationaler Bedeutung. Die Hauptstadt des Kantons Aargau erhielt einen repräsentativen Bau im klassizistischen Stil, auf den die Neubauten in seinem Umfeld reagierten, und so galt der Bahnhofplatz Aarau bald als der schönste der Schweiz. Im Verlauf des 20. Jahrhunderts jedoch raubten Um- und Anbauten dem Bahnhof immer mehr von seinem ursprünglichen Charakter. Nach langer Abwägung der Argumente entschloss man sich schliesslich, den Wanner-Bahnhof zu dokumentieren, abzureissen und durch einen Neubau zu ersetzen. Dieses Buch widmet sich nun dem für die Schweiz seltenen Fall, dass ein Baudenkmal von nationaler Bedeutung abgerissen wird. Die Geschichte des Bahnhofs und des Bahnhofsquartiers wird für Laien und denkmalpflegerische Spezialisten mit vielen historischen Fotos und Originalplänen dokumentiert. Im Zentrum steht ein Gespräch mit den Personen, die damals um den Abbruchentscheid gerungen haben: Aaraus Stadtbaumeister Felix Fuchs, Uli Huber, damals Chef-Architekt SBB, und Jürg Bossardt, ehemaliger Denkmalpfleger Kanton Aargau. Hannes Henz dokumentiert in einem fotografischen Essay den 2010 eröffneten neuen Bahnhof Aarau und seine städtische Umgebung heute.
