Die akute Bronchiolitis ist eine häufige virale Atemwegsinfektion bei Säuglingen und gehört in der Wintersaison zu den Hauptursachen für Krankenhausaufenthalte in Kinderabteilungen. Bei schweren Formen ist häufig eine Einweisung in eine pädiatrische Intensivstation erforderlich. Wenn jedoch nicht genügend Plätze auf der pädiatrischen Intensivstation vorhanden sind, wird die Behandlung schwerer Bronchiolitis zu einer therapeutischen Herausforderung. Die Sauerstofftherapie bleibt ein Schlüsselelement bei der Behandlung dieser Fälle. Die Anwendung der Sauerstofftherapie mit einer Hochfluss-Nasenbrille in einer Abteilung für allgemeine Pädiatrie wirft Fragen bezüglich ihrer Wirksamkeit und Sicherheit auf, wenn sie außerhalb der Intensivstation eingesetzt wird.
