You cannot earn your way into being loved. You were never meant to.

It is late, and a young man is still awake, holding the phone a few inches from his face, running the private arithmetic. The score he thinks he is out of ten. The jaw in the mirror at the angle a video promised was the true one. A confident stranger in front of an expensive car, explaining that women are a market, that he is losing in it, and that he can start winning the moment he stops being weak. He does not exactly believe him. He keeps watching anyway. What he will not say out loud, to anyone, is the truest thing about him at one in the morning: he does not want to be alone.

He has noticed something real, and then been handed a pile of lies about what it means. Two crowds are waiting for a man in that state, and both fail him. One takes his loneliness seriously and tells him it is a war to be won by hardening himself into someone colder. The other tells him to just be himself and stop trying so hard. He is left choosing between advice that is honest and cruel and advice that is kind and empty.

A Man Worth Marrying is the third thing almost no one is saying to him. It refuses to lie about the research, including the parts that sting, and it refuses to flatter him with nothing he can use. Weaving together the science of attraction, the history of how we started treating love like a market, and the oldest evidence of the human heart, it follows three men at three stations of one road: a young man just setting out, a divorced man rebuilding on ground he finally understands, and a widower who kept his vow all the way to the grave and dares, even now, to love again.

It makes a quiet, difficult case that love has a true form after all. Not something you win. Something you give, and keep. That your kindness was never the weakness you were told it was. And that the man who learns to give himself away is the one worth keeping.

For any man who is tired of being sold despair or sold a fight, and who suspects there has to be an honest way to find real love and hold on to it.

A Man Worth Marrying is the fifth book from Jonathan Sumner, author of The Same Wound, The Same Fire, Jesus vs The Machines, and Seeing Red.
