Virtual Revolution

After thirty years of repression, corruption, and tyranny, Egyptians took to the streets on January 25, 2011, Police Day, in mass demonstrations and marches in response to calls from activists on Facebook. This day, dubbed the "e;Day of Rage,"e; was a protest against the oppressive practices. The explosion of public discontent was the culmination of years of accumulated grievances, including the ruling regime's tyranny, its continued application of emergency law, and its restrictions on public freedoms. Furthermore, corruption permeated all political, administrative, and economic institutions of the state. It seems there was a recognition that the prevailing Egyptian culture before the January 25 Revolution held little trust in the media, viewing it as a tool serving private interests rather than the interests of the general public, and even as a "e;fifth estate"e; influencing political decision-making in the country. Undoubtedly, the severe shortcomings of Egyptian media drove young Egyptians towards social media. They used the internet to amplify the phenomenon of "e;protest blogging,"e; establishing dialogues and discussions uncontrolled by traditional elites, and creating virtual networks on social networking sites like Facebook. Consequently, social media proved to be the most powerful tool for documenting and disseminating the events of the January 25 Revolution to the world, both domestically and internationally. With the emergence of these platforms, and in light of the openness and freedom of expression they fostered, the silence surrounding long-hidden and suppressed political, economic, and social issues was broken. These social media platforms became a tool for dismantling the barrier of fear and oppression that had accumulated among the Arab people for years, mobilizing them to take to the streets and confront the regimes until their demands were met, leading to a change in the political landscape what became known as the "e;Arab Spring"e; revolutions. The Arab Spring revolutions began in Tunisia at the end of 2010, quickly spreading to Egypt, then Libya and Yemen, and finally reaching Syria, where events unfolded dramatically, transforming the country into a battleground for a bloody civil war whose chapters remain open even as this book is being written. Anti-regime movements also emerged, only to be quickly silenced, in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and other Arab countries. Based on this premise, the book's subject was chosen: to identify the role played by these platforms (specifically Facebook and Twitter) in the January 25 Revolution and in changing the media landscape in Egypt. It begins with a general problem: the rise of Social media played a prominent role in the Arab Spring uprisings, and its impact on mobilizing the Arab street was discussed. A specific issue was raised: while these platforms served as a forum for Egyptian youth to express their rejection of the regime and revolt against it, they did not cause the revolution. Rather, the revolution was the culmination of years of accumulated economic, social, and political grievances. The book concludes with the following questions:- To what extent did social media play a role in mobilizing the Egyptian street and igniting the January 25th Revolution?- To what extent did these platforms contribute to the revolution's success in achieving its goal of overthrowing the regime of former President Hosni Mubarak?
