Paul Marie Verlaine is a French writer and poet-symbolist. Verlaine occupies a special place among the outstanding French lyricists of the late XIX century. Proclaimed "e;Prince of Poets"e; and revered as a recognized master of the symbolic direction, he, however, was neither its leader nor theorist. The facts of the poet's personal biography and his work are inextricably linked. Nature is passionate and unbalanced, Verlaine often bent under the weight of life's circumstances, entangled in the contradictions of his own destiny and character. But A. France rightly remarked: "e;It is impossible to apply to this poet the same criterion as is applied to prudent people. He has rights that we do not have, because he is incomparably higher and, at the same time, incomparably lower than us. He is an unconscious being, and he is a poet who meets once a century. "e;
